Unique Cultural Experiences in Vancouver
#1: Visit Bill Reid Gallery
Delve into Indigenous culture and art at the Bill Reid Gallery, where captivating exhibits unfold the rich history and creativity of First Nations artists.
Recommended by Rebecca from Veggies Abroad
| “When visiting Vancouver, you can’t skip learning about the area’s indigenous culture. It is important to note that celebrating and learning about Indigenous culture in Vancouver is not limited to specific events or times of the year; it is an ongoing commitment to honouring the history, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in the region. Many organizations are actively working to promote understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures, including The Bill Reid Gallery in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The Gallery is dedicated to celebrating the work and legacy of Bill Reid, a renowned Indigenous Haida artist from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. The Gallery focuses on Indigenous art, particularly the art and culture of the Haida people. Visitors will find a rotating collection of Bill Reid’s art throughout the museum, including his iconic sculptures, jewellery, and other creations. It also hosts exhibitions that showcase the works of historical and contemporary Indigenous artists. In addition to art, there are also interactive exhibits, educational programs, and workshops designed to promote a deeper understanding of Indigenous traditions and contemporary issues. One of the interactive exhibits allows visitors to listen to various songs that feature Chiefs Mungo Martin and Billy Assu in the 1950s. Through hearing the music and witnessing the traditional dances and ceremonies, the Gallery hopes to heighten appreciation and keep the culture alive for generations to come. The Gallery is open daily from 10 AM – 5 PM, and tickets are $13 for adults, $6 for teens, $10 for seniors, and free for Indigenous peoples. After your visit, you can take a short walk down to Bonus Bakery — It’s one of the best vegan bakeries in Vancouver and is famous for its mouthwatering stuffed cookies.” |

#2: Check Out Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
Explore this enchanting Ming Dynasty-style haven, seamlessly connecting the past to the present.
Nestled in the heart of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, named after the founding father of modern China, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, stands as a tranquil oasis, offering visitors a serene escape from the bustling urban landscape.
A Ming Dynasty-style garden home — the first of its kind established beyond China’s borders — it is a distinctive marvel, transcending conventional definitions of a garden, museum, and cultural hub.
As you step through the ornate entrance, you’ll find yourself transported to another time and place. The carefully manicured landscapes, featuring koi-filled ponds, meandering pathways, and vibrant plant life, evoke a sense of harmony and balance.
Every element within the garden has a symbolic significance, telling a story that transcends centuries. Intricately designed pavilions, bridges, and corridors showcase the artistry and craftsmanship of Chinese artisans, creating an immersive experience that transcends cultural boundaries.
As a dynamic cultural space, the garden also offers diverse events like guided tours, concerts, festivals, exhibitions, receptions, and educational programs and hosts various cultural events, such as tea ceremonies and traditional performances, providing an opportunity for visitors to engage with Chinese traditions firsthand.
This commitment to inclusivity and education has garnered the garden numerous accolades, including being recognized as one of Vancouver Heritage Foundation’s “Places That Matter” and earning the title of World’s Top City Garden by National Geographic in 2011.

#5: Marvel at the Iconic Inukshuk Sculpture
Admire the famous Inukshuk sculpture at English Bay, a symbol of human spirit and connection, set against the backdrop of Vancouver’s stunning coastline.
Standing proudly along the shores of English Bay in Vancouver and offering a breathtaking panoramic backdrop of the surrounding ocean and mountains, the Inukshuk sculpture is an iconic emblem of the city.
Crafted by Inuit artist Alvin Kanak of Rankin Inlet Nunavut, this imposing structure stands over six meters high and weighs more than 31,500 kilograms — a testament to Indigenous artistry and craftsmanship.
While it may not adhere to the traditional form of an inuksuk (a stacked stone structure created by the Inuit, used as a cultural symbol and practical landmark for navigation in the Arctic), the sculpture’s uniqueness to Vancouver lies in its connection to the Vancouver Winter Olympics, where it served as a symbol of unity and friendship during the 2010 Games.
All in all, Inukshuk in Vancouver not only captivates with its visual grandeur but stands as a powerful symbol, embodying the enduring spirit of cultural diversity in Canada. Score big on taste and flair with an extravagant Caesar of your choosing!
Famous for their extravagant Caesars, Score on Davie is the place to go if you’re looking for weird things to do in Vancouver — because let’s be honest, where else can you drink a cocktail topped with an entire meal?
Their legendary Checkmate Caesar is easily one of the most outrageous drinks in the city, piled high with a pickle, a ‘Score’ burger, a pulled pork slider, a pulled pork mac & cheese hotdog, hot wings, onion rings, a Cornish game hen, and even a brownie — all somehow balanced over a 4 oz Caesar.
If that sounds a bit too extreme, don’t worry — their Caesar menu is packed with equally wild but slightly more manageable options, like the Mac & Chaeser, which comes topped with deep-fried mac & cheese balls, pickles, and onion rings.

Grouse Mountain is a mountain peak located in the heart of the city, close to Downtown Vancouver. The Grouse Grind is a short, steep climb to the top of the mountain. Also referred to as The Grind or often “Mother Nature’s StairMaster” this is a very popular fitness challenge in Vancouver. Many people take the Skyride Gondola to the top since there are restaurants, easy hiking trails, and other entertainment on top of the mountain. A Skyride Gondola ticket includes a transfer from Canada Place in downtown Vancouver to Grouse Mountain and back. You can also reach the trailhead by car or by bus.” |

#18: Dive into the Wonders of the Vancouver Aquarium
Explore the underwater realm and discover marine marvels at the Vancouver Aquarium, nestled in Stanley Park’s heart, where fascinating sea creatures await.
Recommended by Marissa from Roadtrip Wanderers:
| “The Vancouver Aquarium is one of the most well-known aquariums in Canada, and for good reason. This massive building is over 9,000 square meters, and more than 50,000 animals call it home. One of the most popular exhibits is the Jelly Invasion, where thousands of different jellyfish float around in a mesmerizing display. Visitors will also love the humid Tropic Zone to see snakes and lizards as well as native creatures in the Pacific Canada Pavilion. This is a great rainy day activity, as a 4D theater takes movies to the next level, adding effects like wind and mist to make you feel like you’re part of the action. There are also touch pools to see what sea anemones and starfish look and feel like. Visitors can easily spend hours inside reading all the informative displays for each exhibit and will walk out with much more knowledge than they came in with. That’s not all – the outdoor area is another popular place to visit. The B.C. Wild Coast Exhibit is a must-see, as it has a Marine Mammal Rescue exhibit that’s the only one of its kind in Canada and one of the biggest globally. Visitors can meet the rescued residents who now call the aquarium home, all of whom Fisheries and Oceans Canada determined weren’t healthy enough to be re-released into the wild. The Vancouver Aquarium is perfect for all ages – both children who want to run around seeing new species and adults who love sea life. It’s a great stop on a Vancouver to Banff road trip.” |

You’re very welcome! ☺️
Vancouver is such a fabulous city! Just today we were talking about planning a trip to the city, so this list is very timely. The food scene seems incredible and I love that there are so many outdoorsy things to do in the city.
Glad to inspire ☺️ One recommendation, if I may: if you’re not going specifically for skiing or to see the Christmas lights at Capilano, I’d recommend going in spring/summer to make the most of outdoors.
Thanks for the tips! Still on my travel list!!
Perfect timing. We have flights booked to BC in November so just starting my planning of what to do.
Perfect timing indeed – enjoy your time in beautiful BC! ☺️
