Is Thassos worth visiting? The short answer is: Yes — yes, it is.
If you’re looking for a beautiful, unspoiled Greek island to visit, this North Aegean gem should definitely be at the top of your list.
From beautiful beaches to charming mountain villages, each with an abundance of things to do, here are the top 5 reasons why Thassos is worth visiting on your next vacation!
#1: The Blue of Thassos: Beautiful Beaches and Serenity
Thassos boasts some of the most stunning beaches in Greece. From sheltered coves with crystal-clear water (Aliki Beach, Marble Beach, Livadi Beach, Medalia Beach) to the expansive golden sand beaches (Golden Beach, Paradise Beach) and hip beach bars (La Scala Beach Bar), there is something for everyone.
And because the island isn’t as well-known as some of the others in the Aegean (except among locals and tourists from the Balkans), you won’t find them too crowded.
TOP TIP: During public holidays, like Dekapentavgoustos (August 15th), the island is a top destination for locals from Keramoti and Kavala nearby. So if you want a quieter getaway, you may want to avoid that time. If however, you’re there around a public holiday, don’t fret. Just drive around the coast keeping your eyes open and you are sure to find your own hidden gem in no time.

The amenities and number of things you can do will depend on your beach of choice. But whatever your preferred waterside activity, be it kayaking, canoeing, snorkelling or simply soaking in the last rays of the sun on your sun lounger, Thassos is sure to deliver!

#2: The Green of Thassos: Emerald Landscapes and Hiking Trails
If waking up each morning to serene hilltop views, green as far as the eyes can see, sounds like your idea of paradise, then you’ll love Thassos. In addition to its sandy beaches, the island is also home to some truly breathtaking landscapes, which earned it the name “Emerald Island of the Aegean Sea”.
The slopes and foothills of Mt. Ypsarion, encompassing more than 70% of the island, are blanketed in olive groves, pine forests, and wildflowers, and full of little pockets of heaven waiting to be explored. There are also numerous hiking trails that wind through the island’s picturesque villages and offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea.
From a climb up to the peak of the Ypsarion Mountain to a visit to the breathtaking Giola, Thassos is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature.
Giola: The most Instagrammable spot on Thassos

Giola (also known as “Tear of Aphrodite“), is a spectacular natural pool carved into the rocks by the crashing waves, and one of the most popular swimming holes on the island.
Perfect for a dive, summersault or just lazing on the rocks soaking in the sun… but beware, as it does come with a warning.
#3: The Charm of Thassos: Traditional Villages and Warm Hospitality
Thassos is home to a number of traditional villages where visitors can get a taste of authentic Greek life. Typically located away from the coastline, these villages offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside, as well as all the warmth and hospitality of the locals to make you feel right at home.
No visit to Thassos would be complete without a day trip to Panagia (the most photogenic), Theologos (the one with the best meat dishes) and Kazaviti (the quaintest) for a taste of traditional Thassian architecture, and of course, cuisine.
TOP TIP: These are small mountain villages with limited parking, so if travelling in groups try to come early and if possible together in a single vehicle to make the trip smoother.
For the Best Souvenirs: ARGILOS Handmade Ceramics

If shopping for truly unique local souvenirs is one of your favourite things to do too, then you will love Argilos!
Selling handmade ceramic plates, mugs, and jewellery for everyday use, as well as a variety of delicate decorative items, this cute little shop nestled in one of Panagia’s many winding streets, is well worth a visit.
Whether it is just to peruse or to bring a piece of Thassos back home with you.
#4: The Food in Thassos: A Gastronomic Delight
With its abundance of fresh seafood, olive oil, and herbs, Thassian cuisine is definitely worth indulging in. From the great selection of fresh fish and mezes in Limenas to the succulent spit-roast lamb and goat in the villages of Theologos, Kazaviti, Panagia, and Maries, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on Thassos.
Some of the must-try dishes and local produce include:
- Seafood – Being an island, Thassos is famous for its seafood. The island’s fishermen bring in fresh catch every day, so you can be sure that the seafood dishes on offer are of the highest quality.
- Goat / Lamb – Best enjoyed in a mountain taverna, enjoying a proper roast should definitely be on top of your list of things to do in Thassos.
- Thassian honey– The unique flavour of this honey comes from the aromas of thyme, sage, and other herbs that grow on the island. Jars of this golden goodness can be found in almost all local shops, by roadside stalls, or in traditional sweets (such as ‘karydomelo’ made of walnuts with honey).
- Thassian olive oil – Don’t forget to check out the local olive oil made from Throuba olives.
TOP TIP: Don’t forget to visit Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum in Panagia to learn about the history and production of olive oil on the island, and Koutlis Honey in Potamia to learn about honey-making in Thassos.
#5: The History of Thasos: Stepping into the Past
From its days as a key stop on the Silk Road to its role in Classical mythology (Thassos was said to be the home of the Sirens), there’s much to discover about Thassos.
If you want to step into history with every step you take, you can follow this ancient (circular) route:
- Start your journey at the Old Harbour, walking towards Kalogeriko (a gorgeous two-storey building home to various exhibitions and cultural events), and past the Gate of Hermes And Charites.
- Make sure to stop by the Church of the Holy Apostles for a beautiful view of the sea.
- Head to Thassos’ Ancient Theatre.
- Continue your walk in the Acropolis of Thassos occupying three hills above the Ancient Agora; home to castle ruins, the Temple of Athena and Pan Sanctuary, respectively.
- From here, you can head towards Ancient Agora, either via the Gate of Silenus, Sanctuary of Heracles and Ancient Odeon or simply by tracing your steps back. Whichever you choose, you will only be a stone’s throw away from the Ancient Agora, the political, administrative, commercial and religious centre of the ancient town of Thassos.
For a more curated experience, you can visit the Archaeological Museum and Kalogeriko in Limenas and Theologos Folklore Museum in the mansion-house Hatzigiorgi in Theologos, both often quoted among the top things to do in Thassos.
