London African Food Week: A Celebration of African Cuisine in London

London African Food Week 2024

In the wake of several African restaurants in London snagging Michelin stars, the city is ready for an epic celebration with the return of London African Food Week.

Founded in 2019 by the acclaimed chef Tokunbo Koiki, LAFW is all about shining a spotlight on the rich and diverse food traditions from across the African continent and the Caribbean.

Her passion for authentic and innovative African cuisine has not only brought attention to these delicious dishes but also created a platform for chefs and food enthusiasts to share their love for African food. This, in turn, extended LAFW beyond a food festival and into a community that supports local Black-owned businesses.

Whether you’re a lover of African cuisine, or like me, looking to expand your palate while supporting communities that bring these incredible dishes to life, London African Food Week is sure to have something for you!

What to Expect at London African Food Week

A Culinary Extravaganza

Starting on Saturday, May 25th, London African Food Week kicks off with a Coffee and Chocolate Festival at The Africa Centre in central London, perfectly timed with Africa Day. This festival celebrates Africa’s deep-rooted connections with coffee and chocolate — two treats that have won hearts worldwide.

Celebrations continue with Bottomless Plantain Brunch and Day Party on Sunday, May 26th. For the rest of the week, food lovers can enjoy ‘Chef Takeovers’ — indulging in exquisite dining experiences and savouring dishes that highlight the unique flavours of African cuisine.

The week also promises an array of other exciting culinary activities. From lively panel discussions to food markets, there’s something for everyone!

Beyond Food: Growth and Learning

London African Food Week isn’t just about eating amazing food; it’s also about learning and growth. The event also includes business clinics, content creation workshops, and personal branding masterclasses to support culinary entrepreneurs.

Workshops led by experts will help participants gain invaluable insights into the food business, covering aspects like supply chains, sourcing, marketing, and distribution — and build standout brands and turn their culinary passions into thriving businesses!

Community and Connection

London African Food Week is more than just a celebration of food; it’s a heartfelt gathering designed to foster community and connection. Central to this mission is the spirit of Teranga — an ethos of hospitality, warmth, and generosity that is deeply embedded in African culture.

“A common theme you’ll see across the African continent is the sharing food as an expression of love, culture, community, and joy. Food is more than eating and nourishment to our bodies, it’s a universal experience that connects us together.”

Joyce Oladeinde, Co-founder of Crescendo Digital

This event is open to everyone and serves as a bridge, connecting diverse communities through the universal love of food.

Whether you’re a long-time resident, new to the city or just passing through, London African Food Week invites you to come together and honour the rich cultural contributions of African heritage in London.

Chef Takeover Experience

This year, I had the pleasure of attending the Aroma of East Africa Fusion Delight event!

The menu included a mix of Somalian and Ethiopian dishes:

We began with the freshest hummus I ever had the chance to taste, served with pitta bread and the crispiest, most delicious samosas filled to the brim with lentils – setting the tone for an extraordinary meal.

For the main course, I opted for the meat dishes: Hilib (lamb and vegetable sauté) and Suqaar Digaag (spiced chicken and vegetable sauté), both served with rice, salad, and homemade sauces. These dishes were rich in Somali spices and cooked to perfection.

One of the highlights of my meal was the spicy sauces that accompanied the dishes, especially the green chilli sauce. I absolutely adored it — each bite with the sauce added a delightful kick that enhanced the overall flavour profile of the meal.

One of the most surprising and delightful parts of the meal was being served banana with my rice. Initially, I was puzzled by this combination, but I quickly learned that it’s a traditional Somali way to enjoy rice. Channelling my inner Joey from Friends, I found myself thinking, “Chicken good, rice good, banana good!”

By the end of the meal, I was a convert to this unique and delicious pairing!

My friend went for the vegan option with Gomen (spinach with onion, carrot, and mixed peppers), Shiro (roasted ground chickpeas simmered with onion, ginger, and chilli), and Lenthol (lentils with special Ethiopian spices, onion, and tomatoes), all served with the most pillowy Injera bread and extremely delicious!

We concluded our dinner with a dessert and a cup of aromatic and soothing tea (or rather Somali spiced tea with milk), which was the perfect way to end a delightful evening, where we thoroughly enjoyed trying the rich and diverse flavours of East African cuisine and exploring the unique combinations and spices!
