Weather in Alpe d’Huez

#1: Is Alpe d’Huez Snow Sure?

Thanks to its high altitude (with the highest lift reaching 3,300 metres), Alpe d’Huez is relatively snow-sure.

The north-facing slopes of Alpe d’Huez in particular enjoy a long ski season, typically lasting from November to April. The south or south-west facing slopes, which constitute the majority, on the other hand, can get a little icy and slushy towards the beginning of spring.

Alpe d’Huez Snow Report/Snow History

November: 45 cm / December: 122 cm / January: 99 cm / February: 68 cm / March: 64 cm

Overall, Alpe d’Huez has a pretty good snow record. For optimal snow levels, however, try to avoid visiting late in the season. When we went there around the end of March 2019, the bigger, higher slopes were divine, if not a bit icy at times. Some of the smaller slopes at lower altitudes however had already quite a few bare spots.

For the most up-to-date information, check out the Alpe d’Huez ski report.

#3: What to Wear in Alpe d’Huez in Winter?

When visiting Alpe d’Huez in the winter, it’s important to dress appropriately to ensure you stay warm and dry while enjoying the snowy activities.

Layering is Key: Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking fabric to keep you dry. A mid-layer, such as a fleece jacket or sweater, will provide additional warmth. Finally, an outer layer, like a waterproof and windproof ski jacket and pants, will protect you from the elements.

Essential Accessories: Don’t forget gloves, scarves, and hats, as well as thick socks suitable for ski boots. Sunglasses or goggles are also essential due to the bright reflection off of the snow – as is sunscreen! For the ultimate skiing convenience, I highly recommend investing in a backpack with a built-in bladder — a game-changer for effortlessly carrying all your skiing essentials while staying hydrated on the slopes.

Footwear: Make sure to pack waterproof boots for walking around the resort.

Renting Option: If you’d rather not travel with bulky ski wear, you can rent ski suits, jackets, and ski bottoms in Alpe d’Huez.

Off-Slope Clothing: If you’re planning to enjoy some of the other amenities in Alpe d’Huez, such as the pool and spa, remember to pack a swimsuit and flip-flops.

We booked our trip to Alpe d’Huez very very last mjinute, so a private room in Moontain Hostel in Oz-en-Oisans was pretty much our only option. Initially, we had some reservations given that it was a hostel, but we were pleasantly surprised by what we encountered.

From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted by an inviting and lively atmosphere. The large wooden communal kitchen became our favorite hangout spot. The breakfast served was simply amazing, offering a variety of options to kickstart our day on a high note.

What truly took our breath away, however, were the unadulterated views overlooking the majestic mountains. Waking up to such a sight was nothing short of magical, making us feel like we were right in the heart of nature’s grandeur.

Oz-en-Oisans is definitely quieter than some of the other places in Alpe d’Huez, but we found this tranquility to be rather refreshing. It allowed us to enjoy the beauty of our surroundings without any distractions, adding a unique charm to our stay.

In retrospect, booking late turned out to be a blessing in disguise, leading us to discover the hidden gem that is Moontain Hostel.
