When you think of Alsace, what comes to mind? Perhaps it’s the fairytale-like villages nestled in the Vosges mountains or the delicious wines that hail from this region. But Alsace is also renowned for its cuisine, and there’s no better place to get a taste of it than at Au Crocodile in Strasbourg.

Location
The restaurant is nestled in the historic centre of the European capital of Strasbourg, close to many of the city’s historical landmarks. Just keep your eyes peeled for a stuffed crocodile – a souvenir brought back from Egypt by a local Napoleonic soldier – hanging over the entrance. You really can’t miss it!
Address: 10 Rue de l’Outre, 67000 Strasbourg, France

History
Established in 1971, Au Crocodile is a veritable Strasbourg institution with its own rich history.
The restaurant is no stranger to the Michelin guide, being awarded three of the long-coveted stars back in 1989, under chef Émile Jung and his wife Monique. Following the loss of one of these stars in 2002, and the eventual retirement of Émile Jung in 2009, the restaurant changed hands a few times and shed its stars.
It wasn’t until 2015 that it was given a new life under the leadership of Cedric Moulot, young chef Franck Pelux and his partner Sarah Benahmed in charge of the restaurant service. The trio put the restaurant back on the map of famed Strasbourg eateries, and earned it back a Michelin star in the process! We visited Au Crocodile in 2018 with this power trio still at the helm and thoroughly enjoyed our experience.
As of 2022, the restaurant remains a one-star Michelin wonder under the direction of Chef Romain Brillat.
The Tasting Menu
Au Crocodile is known for its elegant tasting menu, which changes seasonally, but always features fresh locally-sourced ingredients. The menu features classic Alsatian cuisine with an elegant contemporary twist, perfectly marrying the traditional with the modern. The wine list is also impressive, with a wide selection of both local and international wines. As a result, Au Crocodile is a perfect choice for foodies who want to experience the best of French cuisine.
When we booked to visit in December 2018, we knew we were visiting a 1* Michelin restaurant. But we had no idea that it would soon also be crowned the best gourmet restaurant in the world by Travellers’ Choice. Having said that, given the sublime dishes and experience we had, it sure does not come as a surprise:

Service and Atmosphere
The dining room in Au Crocodile is decorated with rich mahogany furnishings and beautiful artwork, creating an elegant and upscale atmosphere. The tableside service is impeccable in every respect. Our sommelier Pierre and our waiter Arnold are pleasantly attentive, extremely knowledgeable and full of great recommendations and stories about the region. Their region.
Everything is so well thought out and beautifully executed. Just as you are left thinking this dinner cannot get any better, in comes the cheese cart full of gooey goodness to choose from:

Or a dessert cart with delectable handmade chocolates and sweets of all sorts:
