“The town of Corsier-sur-Vevey, situated on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva, is worth a day trip from Bern. Silent film star Charlie Chaplin moved to Switzerland in the 1950s after he was exiled from the USA. He made his home in Vevey, where he lived until the end of his life.
Located at his 37-acre estate, Chaplin’s World is a cool museum dedicated to the movie star and the man. Visitors can learn about his film career and play around with various set pieces. It also has some family videos to watch and enjoy — he seems just as silly in real life as he does on the screen.
In addition to the museum, fans can visit his statue near the lake and his grave at the local cemetery. There are also many large-scale murals of his image located around town.
While Chaplin is the big draw, there are other things to enjoy in Vevey. Quai Perdonnet offers a beautiful stroll alongside Lake Geneva. Once you get to Lucerne, you must explore the charming Old Town adorned with historic landmarks like the Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower. It’s a lovely place to just wander aimlessly for hours!
Another great way to soak in the city is to take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne. During the summer season, the blue lake glistens and creates a picture-perfect scene surrounded by majestic mountains. There’s so much to see and do in Basel that a day trip isn’t enough, but to see the highlights, you can join a free walking tour to discover the old neighbourhoods of the city as well as the historic Town Hall. You can combine this with a free visit to the botanical garden at the university.
Alternatively, you can take an architectural walk discovering the buildings of the Exhibition Center, Roche Tower and seeing Workroom Warteck.
For the afternoon, choose to visit a local museum, which Basel has plenty to choose from! The art museum Museum Tinguely is a popular choice (open 11 am to 6 pm), and you can walk back along the promenade afterwards. “No visit to Switzerland would be complete without seeing the Matterhorn, the country’s most famous mountain. While the Matterhorn and the nearby village of Zermatt are quite a distance from Bern, it is easy to visit this bucket-list destination on a day trip.
There are regular hourly trains from Bern that will get you to Zermatt in just over two hours with a change in Visp. If you prefer to drive from Bern you will have to park in Täsch and take the train or a taxi from there as Zermatt itself is car-free. Either way, with an early start you can get to Zermatt in the morning so that you have enough time to explore the area.
Once in Zermatt, seeing the Matterhorn is easy provided the weather is good. The iconic mountain is visible pretty much anywhere in town if it isn’t hidden by clouds.
With a full day in Zermatt, you could take a trip up the mountain to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (on the Klein Matterhorn) with Zermatt’s Glacier Palace, a viewing platform, and a cinema lounge.
